The South African Belladonna Lily (Amaryllis belladonna) is also known as the Jersey Lily. This is ideal for the garden. It produces long, slender leaves in the spring, which die back in early summer. Fragrant rosy-pink flowers appear in late summer, on 24 inch (60cm) stalks. The 4 to 6 inch (10-15cm), trumpet-shaped flowers can also be white, red, rosy red, or pink and are excellent as cut flowers, lasting about a week.

In areas where temperatures do not drop below 50 deg.F (10 deg.C), they can be planted with the top of the bulb level with the soil . In colder areas, plant them deeper to protect from the cold. Hardy in USDA zones 8 - 11. Plant about 1 foot apart.

They like good, well drained soil in a hot location in full sun. It is best to grow them among other plants to hide the dieing leaves in early summer, but avoid shading the soil above the bulbs. Heat and dryness during their dormant period in late spring and early summer are necessary for proper growth of the bulb. Water regularly when Belladonna Lilies are in active growth and apply fertilizer in late summer.

If growing in pots plant them so that the tops of the bulbs are exposed above the soil level. Once the foliage has died stop watering. You can let them become pot bound.

Your bulbs can be divided when the foliage has died and dried up. However they dislike disturbance and will take several years to settle down and flower again after you move them.

Belladonna Lilies are poisonous so you need to ensure children do not eat them.
