About Ammobium

Ammobium is also called the Winged Everlasting. Botanically the species is Ammobium alatum. It is pronounced as 'am-MOH-bee-um'.

Ammobium has tiny (thumbnail size), daisy-shaped, bright white flowers with a golden-yellow center. The blooms are on winged stems 12 to 16 inches (30-40cm) long and give a delicate look to floral arrangements. The name Ammobium comes from the Greek "ammos" (sand) and "bio" (to live). These plants come from Eastern Australia and grow in sandy soil.

The popular name Winged Everlasting is derived from the peculiar winged formation on the branches. The "alatum" part of the Latin means "winged" and refers to the thin ridges or "wings" on the stems. And "everlasting" comes from the ability to use them as dried flowers.

Ammobium flowers are available in summer and autumn. Purchase when most of the flowers are fully open.

1. Unpack your flowers straightaway.

2. Use a clean vase. Fill it with clean lukewarm water and add a floral preservative solution, following the instructions provided.

3. Cut off all the foliage on the stem that would be below the water level in the vase. Also remove any damaged leaves or flowers, and any yellowing foliage.

4. Cut off about 1 inch (2.5cm) from the bottom of the flower stems with the stems under water. Make the cut at an angle so that the flower stems do not rest flat on the bottom of the vase.

By doing this you help your Ammobium to maintain water uptake. Air bubbles and debris tends to collect in the bases of the stems and ,if this is not removed, water flow in the stems is greatly restricted. The cut should be at an angle and not flat across. You do not want the flower stems resting flat on the bottom of the vase since this will also restrict water uptake.

5. Arrange your flowers in the vase so that they are attractively displayed.

6. Keep Ammobium in a cool place and out of direct sunlight. Avoid draughts which will dehydrate the flowers. They do not like very hot or cold areas. In a hot place in the direct sun your flowers will soon die.

Care of Your Ammobium Flowers

1. Check the water level frequently and top up the vase with lukewarm water to avoid chilling the flowers.

2. Regularly remove damaged, or dying flowers and foliage. This helps your flowers last longer.

3. Every 3 or 4 days remove your flowers from the vase. And cut off about 1 inch (2.5cm) from the bottom of the flower stems under water and at an angle . This will maintain good water uptake.

Flower Life

With good care Ammobiums can have a vase life of up to 7 days.

They are often used as a dried flower. Cut the stems for drying just before the flowers are fully open, otherwise the yellow central disk may go dark. They continue to open during drying. To dry ammobium, hang the flower stems in bunches upside down in a dark, damp-free, and airy place. Flowers for drying can be cut several times in a season.

Growing Ammobium Outside in the       Garden

Ammobium should be grown in a fertile, light, sandy soil that is well drained. They like a warm, sunny location. Space 12 to 15 inches (30-37cm) apart. The plant develops a leaf rosette with a 12 inch (30cm) spread and almost leafless stems from 16 to 36 inches (40-90cm) high depending on variety.

The flowering period is from July until the first frost. Dead heading prolongs flower production.

Ammobium likes warm days with cool nights. Cold rainy weather may cause disease problems.

Propagation

Sow seed April or May in a seed tray or container. Germination takes 4-6 days at 60-70 deg. F (16-21 deg. C). Grow on in pots in a cool greenhouse at 50 deg. F (10 deg. C) minimum and plant out in late spring as soon as the danger of frost is over.

Types of Ammobium

Ammobiums are really perennials, but are not frost hardy, so they are treated as half hardy annuals.

'Bikini' is a very compact and uniform variety, about 12 inches (30cm) in height. It is a a Fleuroselect gold medal winner.

'Grandiflorum' is the traditional, large-flowered form.
