When choosing a Chrysanthemum pot plant it is important to pick out a healthy and good looking one so that the floral display will last well. The plant should not show disease or pest problems, and should not have damaged, disfigured, discolored, shriveled or yellowed foliage or flowers.
It is best to buy it when no more than 25 percent of the blossoms are open. Also pick out a compact, nicely shaped plant that does not need supporting to keep upright. Ideally it should have healthy, dark green foliage all the way up right from the base of the plant.
Grow your pot plant in direct sunlight to produce a strong, bushy plant at flowering time. Plants in bud prefer a sunny window. Plants with open flowers do well in a wide range of light conditions. But bright, indirect sunlight is best to keep the plants growing without fading the blooms. The plant can be kept near a window to receive enough bright, indirect light to keep the foliage healthy, and displayed in another part of the home for shorter periods of time.
Moderately moist soil is preferred. Water thoroughly when the soil surface feels dry to the touch. Check for watering 3 to 4 times per week. If the soil dries out too often this can result in bud drop and may kill your plant. Drain excess water into a saucer underneath the pot to protect furniture. But don't let your plant stand in water, as this can cause disease.
Normal room temperatures are fine - 65-75 deg F (18-24 deg C) daytimes and slightly cooler at night. Avoid excessively hot or cold areas.
You can extend the flowering period by putting your plant in a cool place (50-60 deg F, 10-15 deg C) for the night.
There is no need to give any fertilizer while your plant is flowering. Regularly remove all dead leaves and faded blooms, and keep the foliage dry to avoid disease.
Average flowering time is 15-25 days, but some types can last up to 8 weeks, especially if kept in a cooler temperature.
Chrysanthemums flower once a year. Flowering is a response to a period of time with short days and long nights.
It is best to discard your plant after flowering is completed and replace it with another. Or, it can be planted out in the garden, preferably in the early spring. But you will need to protect it from winter weather. (see Chrysanthemums Outdoors ).
In the latter case, when flowering is finished, move your pot plant to a cool, brightly lit location for the winter. When the potting soil dries to a depth of two to three inches give it a good watering. It will be alright for a while. Don't over water.
When the worst of the winter weather has passed it can be planted outdoors. But if new growth is present, wait until any danger of frost has gone before placing outside. Your plant needs to be gradually acclimatized before planting. Put the pot in partial shade in a sheltered part of the garden during the day, and at night move to a cool room . As the nights warm up, so there is less variance between day and night temperatures, you can finally plant it out into the garden.
Watch out for aphids, thrips, spider mites, and whiteflies. Root rot can be a problems for plants kept too wet over winter. See also Chrysanthemum Pests - Indoors.
