Hamamelis is also called Witchhazel. Hamamelis blooms are thickly clustered along leafless stems some 16-20 inches (40-50 cm) long, when cut. The spidery, yellow flowers are 1-1.5 inches (2-4 cm) wide and fragrant. Witchhazel flowers are available in winter.
The best time to buy Hamamelis is when the flowers are starting to open. The vase life is 7-9 days. The woody stem bases can be softened by plunging the bottoms into boiling water for a few seconds. This will help water uptake. Also do not crush the stems - cut with a sharp knife or secateurs.
